Summer VS Winter [

We've had a few debates in our English class at church, and most of the time we have lots of fun. This time the topic is "summer VS winter". So if you prefer summer, you'll have to tell us why you like summer. Here's the list of what you can do in summer and winter:在教會英文課,有時老師應同學請求,都會讓我們嘗試用英語辯論。

This was written actually a long time ago... I mean, this blog entry should've been published in late 2010 or early 2011... (Can't remember.) But lazy bone like me, I finally got it finished. Anyway, let's see what we learned during Elder Green's English class:

Just as the English class started, Elder Green asked us, "In what month do people talk the least?" Well, the answer is "February", as it's the shortest month. It's simple and fun, isn't it? Surpringly it seems that none of us came up with the answer! Laughing out loud. Elder Green said that he would tell us some laffy taffy jokes. I'll keep you guys updated if he ever does!

Alright, now let's see what else we learned this time:

In our English class at church, our teacher Elder Green decided that we would have a debate fortnightly.  I missed the first debate, which was talking about death penalties.  (However, we had already debated on this topic when Elder Nino was our English teacher.)  The second debate was about school uniforms.  In my team, we had to come up with ideas to explain why we think why students should wear school uniforms.  So my team members such as two Marks both gave interesting reasons to support school uniforms.  One of the Marks said that when he was a little boy, he got “chicken legs” which made him “unnoticeable”.  That is, few girls would pay attention to him.  Since Mark emphasized too much on his chicken legs, Jimbo and David from the other team jokingly said that the topic was changed from “school uniforms” to “chicken legs”.  Jimbo especially would like to have a look at Mark’s chicken legs, haha.  I think that at the end we had a tie, as both teams worked very hard on thinking of good reasons.

Elder Green then talked about dress code back at his chuch.

On 30 December, two days before 2011, we learned some random things during the English class at church.  As usual, Elder Green asked us if we brought any questions for him. One of the students asked him about dragons. Here is the list of dragons he taught us:
T-rex

As usual, our English teacher from church Elder Green taught us quite a few English words that we had never thought about learning.
Eg. Taking drugs is a slipper slope.
2. Slippery snack means “not a very good person”.

As usual, our English teachers from church taught us some useful words, phrases and idioms:

Hick--> 鄉巴佬

A couple of months, our English teacher from church taught us a few useful idioms. Here is what we learned:

We can never forget the first day we met Elder Bird.  After Sister Scott left, Elder Bird became our teacher.  When Elder Bird told us that his Chinese surname was Cai (蔡), we thought that perhaps other missionaries played a prank on him.  We all burst into laughter, and one of my classmates asked him, "Do you know what your Chinese surname means?"

Two weeks ago we had a substitute teacher for Elder Green, who had to take care of his companion who was ill.  The substitute teacher was Elder Sikong.  Sikong said that he used to study at USAF Academy, so it was interesting to him that his Chinese name was similar to "pilot" in Chinese.  In the beginning, he taught us a few words: mess around/horseplay/goof-off/misbehaved and an adjective word rowdy.  Eg. 8-year-old boys are rowdy.  He then told us that he went to three museums: National Museum of History, Taipei Fine Arts Museum and Miniatures Museum of Taiwan. 課程一開始,他教導我們一些跟玩耍有關的單字,比如:mess around/horseplay/goof-off/misbehaved以及一個形容詞rowdy。

He said that he loved Miniatures Museum of Taiwan the best, which really surprised me.  I thought that white people wouldn't be interested in seeing things that are similar to things in their countries.  Anyway, I'm glad that he liked
Miniatures Museum of Taiwan because I like this museum, too.

In our English class at church, our teacher Sister Scott has taught us some useful words to call people we love.  She said that girls could say whatever they wanted, haha! Hooray for girls. :)  Sister Scott added that it sounded weird to call a koala "adorable".  Let's have a look:

I've written quite a few blog entries about our English class at church.  One day, Sister Scott mentioned some tongue twisters in English.  You can try to practice if you want:

Well, I'm not going to talk about this film Catch Me If You Can in this blog post, but there's one scene in this film that has something to do (more or less) with today's topic - "Knock knock".  One time our former teacher from church Sister Scott talked about the famous Knock Knock joke in the USA.  Here are two examples:

Two truths and a lie [

Last week, during the church's English class, we talked about the difference among "bliss", "euphoric" and "ecstasy", and then we played a gamed called "Two truths and a lie".

Two weeks ago, in our church's English class, our teacher Nathan talked about the Beatles and some films.  Before we started it, I took out a pack of toffee muffins and a pack of blueberry muffins my sister bought in London to share with my teacher and classmates.  When the teacher learned that those muffins were from London, he was surprised and touched.  He kept saying, "You're so kind." Haha. He had no idea if I had had to eat those muffins on my own, my tummy would have exploded. I also gave each of them a walnut candy, which was very hard.  The teacher Nathan said that he rarely ate candy that hard, as it would hurt the roof of his tongue.  I didn't tell him that this is the reason why I didn't want to eat walnut candy.  I prefer chestnut candy, so I ate them all.

Dear John [分手信] It wasn't until I started to do some research about the English game "think pink", I got to learn that it's also a brand name! No, I'm not going to talk about the brand "think pink".  What I'm going to talk about is our teacher Nathan's love story, which actually sounds hilarious to us, and also the game "think pink".

Last week inthe church's English class, the teacher tried to think of funny namesfor everyone.  For example, if someone is called Alice, he will write,"Alice in Wonderland".  Interestingly, there were two girls named Alicein the class.  So you can see what he did for our names: Markbecame "Mark Twain". (The teacher added X3 because there were three mencalled Mark in this class), and Judy became "Hey Judy" (not "HeyJude").

Classmates @ the church's English class [教會英文班學員上課名單]Two weeks ago the church's English class was still as funny as usual. Since there were not enough students from Advanced class, the students from the Advanced class had to come to join in the students in the intermediate class. So the teacher started with calling the roll - basically he needed us to remind him of our names.  When someone told him that her English name was Melody, the teacher drew a note as the letter "d" (shown in the photo).  When a guy told the teacher that his name was Min, the teacher then wrote down a Chinese character 皿, meaning "container". When the teacher saw Monica, he remembered her name! So I whispered to Monica why everyone at this church seemed to remember her name, but they hardly remember my name.  The teacher heard what I murmured, so he said that my name was a slipper name, while Monica's name was a sticky name.
