Two weeks ago, I went to an exhibition, which was held by the Taiwan branch of International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE). ICYE an international non-profit youth exchange organisation promoting youth mobility, intercultural learning and international voluntary service. The exhibition was called Before and After. Anyone who ever participated in ICYE programmes was invited to contribute their ideas/projects to this exhibition.
Before we got started...
Did you notice a map on the ground? I was standing on it by mistake, and a staff member was nicely reminding me of this map!
I am not sure what the creator meant to tell us, but I love every creator's work.
Travellers' secrets - postcards. Have you ever sent a postcard to yourself when you travel abroad? I always send postcards to my friends when I go to another country.
Coucusurf - this is something I haven't tried yet. The creator made this bed because one time, he indeed slept on a bed which was put on lots of boxes.
Mr Jian and his daughter gave us fantastic sharing. Mr Jian was the first Taiwanese person who went to Switzerland through ICYE. 20 years later, his daughter followed his footsteps and went to England.
20 years ago, Mr Jian met a priest, who told him that there was an inexpensive way to go abroad. The priest encouraged Mr Jian to go for it, and that's how Mr Jian participated in ICYE's programmes. At that time, he was 29 years old, and he was already a father to a one-year-old daughter. He had been working as a social worker, so it was interesting for him to go to Europe to know about the social welfare in Europe. Mr Jian carried quite heavy stuff, including a video camera.
What impressed me the most is that Mr Jian tried skiing when he was in Switzerland. He said that in Switzerland, a coach would assist a physically disabled person to ski. I never expected this...
When Mr Jian was in Switzerland, local people would invite him to go to their houses to have a cup of tea every day he walked past them. That sounds quite sweet and warm.
Mr Jian's daughter gave us a very touching sharing. Let's call her Ms Jian. After graduating from university, Ms Jian finally decided to fly to the UK through ICYE. Whilst she was working as a volunteer in the UK, she managed to contact her father's host family in Switzerland. So she flew there to meet his father's "host parents". She also let her father talk to his host mother through Skype! Having spoken no German for 20 years, Mr Jian's German was already hopeless.
Despite the age of Mr Jian's host mother, who is in her early 80s and can't walk well, she insisted showing Ms Jian every path she showed Mr Jian. The Swiss lady was sad, as she didn't know if there would be another time for them to meet in person again.
After their sharing, there was a question and answer session.
When asked what Mr Jian's great worry was, he told us that when his daughter was 15 years old, she almost got killed from a car accident. On that day, she went out with her friends, and they rode scooters. Mr Jian has always been open-minded and supportive to his daughter. Whatever his daughter wants to do, he never says no. As a result, when he saw his daughter in the emergency room, he was thinking that perhaps the way he educated his daughter has been wrong? However, he also realised one thing: there must be a reason for anything. Everything seems destined. It doesn't mean that you'll be safe forever even if you stay at home and never go out every day. Hence, it doesn't mean that you'll be dangerous if you go to somewhere far away.
If you never try something, how can you know what you'll get?
As for the difference between ICYE and "Working Holiday", Mr Jian said, 1) you don't need to be very good at English to join in any ICYE programme. 2) Through ICYE, you live and work with local people, and you'll learn the culture, language and people about the country where you choose to go. While in most cases in "Working Holiday", a lot of Taiwanese young people work for Chinese-speaking companies, restaurants or shops.
Now, let's move on and look at some work at this exhibition:
This box is my favourite work. What is inside the box? We'll find out soon.
A friend of mine was looking closely through the holes of the box, and another friend of mine was turning the stick.
When the stick was turned, the photos turned, too. So you'd see lots of different photos. This photo above is the Highlands. That's extraordinarily beautiful. I hope I'll go there one day, too.
Then my friend was helping other visitors look at photos... He is very helpful and enthusiastic, isn't he?
This is another mystery box.
Can you see what the creator meant to tell us?
From her caption, it says:
In the 1 and 2 photos, suppose there is a pair of Taiwanese parents with their two kids in a restaurant, they usually would tell the waiters/waitresses that they are two adults with two kids. However, in Denmark, parents would tell the waiters/waitresses that there are 5 people in their family.
In the photo 3 and photo 4, in Taiwan, if a friend of yours is driving your car and is speeding, you'll get the ticket, not your friend. However, in Denmark, even if the reckless driver is driving his or her friend's car, s/he will get the ticket. The car owner won't get fined.
This is another work by one of the creators. This creator went to Sweden, where she learned to knit and make her own shoes.
She also made a traditional Sweddish dress, something she never expected herself to be doing before she went to Sweden.
At last, all of the ICYE staff and participators took a selfie. I had never seen a "machine" like that, so I took a photo of it.
Although this exhibition was over, there will be the same exhibition in Kaohsiung and Tainan. Stay tuned on the Facebook page of ICYE!
